Dan was born in Greenville, SC, the son of a Church of God minister. His family lived in various parts of the United States during his youth, finally settling down in Greenwood, SC during Dan’s teen years.
Dan attended Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee from 1969 through 1972, where he studied music education (voice and trumpet). He played some community baseball while there. As his senior year approached, he decided that the idea of teaching high school kids how to sing terrified him. He changed his major to Business (Marketing) and transferred to the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. He left USC in 1973 and entered the financial services business. In March 1975 he moved to Charleston and founded Childress Associates, LLC. He completed his professional studies with the American College in Bryn Mawr, PA, achieving the designations of Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
Since 1973 Dan has provided financial and management services to a select clientele throughout the country. In 1987 he aligned his practice with Financial Management Group, Inc. (FMG), a network of financial advisors serving clients throughout the southeast. In February 2002 he acquired and became president and CEO of FMG.
Dan is registered at the Series 7 level for securities transactions, is a Registered Principal, and an Investment Advisor Representative. He holds licenses for all lines of insurance through a number of companies. He advises and counsels his clients as well as providing investment and insurance products to all areas of economic concern.
Dan is active in his local church, where he teaches and serves on various councils and committees. His hobbies include golf, golf, and golf. He is an active member at Snee Farm Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, SC where he serves on the membership committee and is a member of the Men’s Golf Association. Dan also sings second tenor in the Charleston Men’s Chorus.
He is a past president of the local chapter of the American Society of CLU, ChFC and of the Charleston Estate Planning Council. Dan is also a member of various national and local industry associations. He speaks frequently to professional and consumer groups, is often asked to consult with planning professionals of various disciplines, and is periodically asked by the industry press to provide comments for publication on timely issues.
Dan’s wife, Carolyn, manages their private client practice. They also have a beautiful daughter, Danna, who is pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.
